"O Little Town of Bethlehem, How Still We See Thee Lie"
Undoubtedly, the villagers of Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago slumbered unaware of the miracle unfolding within their midst; the arrival of God's greatest gift to the world. So, we too as Christians slumber, sleep-walking through frenzied holiday preparations oblivious to the miracle of Christ's birth.
Awaken from the stupor of 21st century living and rekindle the joy of Christmas by joining us at First United Methodist Church on December 4, 5, 6 & 7, 2010 for our 7th annual exhibit of nativity scenes and angels. Bathed in candlelight, amidst fragrant evergreens and serenaded by the strings of a harp, this year's exhibit will feature over 500 nativity sets and angels.
The mystery of the nativity has inspired artists for centuries and today renderings of the creche grace many homes and hold a special place in the heart of the believer. Our exhibit reflects the regard with which these collections are held. Diversity of depiction is at the heart of "And it Came to Pass". Some of the nativity sets are simple, while others are elaborate. Some were discovered in faraway lands; others were purchased at the local discount store. From mud figures to fine porcelains, the creches represented are as diverse as the homes from which they come. Regardless of their origin, style or composition, all serve a single purpose - to remind the Christian of a miraculous birth many long years ago. It is the universality of the story depicted that renders significance and value.
